Also, good thinking on the choice of material. Our Connecticut winter is not nearly as harsh as the ones out your way, so fire resistant mortar was fine for me.

You covered the chimney plate with mortar?

No. I covered my chimney plate with concrete which is stronger than mortar. Two years later (where’s the time go?) it’s holding up OK but does have a few cracks. Hindsight being 20/20 I would say it’s not really critical which you use though.
