Can regular concrete decorative bricks be used for the ring around the firebrick oven floor? Or would it be better to use a clay brick because of the oven heat? The
Hi Darrell and welcome to the BrickWood forum.
We discourage the use of concrete brick for that purpose. It touches the firebrick hearth, and concrete degrades with heat.
The good news is that standard clay brick is likely less expensive, and since it’s made in a firing process it does not care about indirect or convective heat.
The general rules are:
- Anything that fire touches should be firebrick
- Anything else that heat touches should be brick
- Everything else is for strength, support, or decoration
If you like the look of concrete decorative blocks, you can certainly add a veneer over the clay bricks as part of your finishing steps.

also don’t forget the high heat mortar for any type of brick or tiles you use around the front
