Mattone Barile Grande Step 7 and Step 48

In step 7 of the instructions it says Do not fill the loose joints between the firebrick. This will be done in step 48. I am not seeing a step 48 in the instructions.

Hi Darrell,

This instruction has achieved “Easter Egg” status in the BrickWood universe. If you use the search function you’ll find many posts asking about the “missing” Step 48.

The short solution is that there used to be a step 48. It involved filling the loose joints with flour. BrickWood later found it was causing more problems than it solved and removed that step in favor of just leaving the joints alone and allowing them to fill up with ash from your (eventual) fires.

Two advantages:

  1. It’s free.
  2. It won’t get moldy or sticky like flour will if the floor later gets damp.

So, don’t worry about step 48, and thank you for being a diligent builder who looks ahead! It causes way fewer issues than the builders who have no idea why they’re doing a particular task.
