Progress: First Frame Bricks

Just wanted to share my progress. I am starting to build the brick frame for the hearth. As you can see I have bricks with holes (fortunately my supplier has the same brick without holes, so the four corners will be replaced). I would never make it as a brick mason, I’m way too slow but I am learning as I go and so far so good.

Any tips for cleaning the red brick to remove the mortar residue? Thanks!

I use 1 part vinegar to 7 parts water. Put it in a spray bottle, spray it on, give it a light scrubbing and hose it off.

This formula was recommended by the maker of my stone veneer when I asked them the same question about removing mortar haze.

Great, I’ll give it a try. Thanks very much!

@kgondoly is correct. Start w/ a natural formula first. Once you start with the chemicals, that’s when irreversible damage occurs.

Back in my brick-and-paver sales rep days, I removed all the color from a dealer’s brand-new paver display w/ a bottle of Acid Magic and good intentions (with a dash of naivete).

Needless to say - I lost that account.
