NEVER use softwood kindling (like Pine) or ANY other types of flame starters. These types of firestarters may contain chemicals or natural tars that may come in contact with the hearth cooking surface. So unless you want your freshly baked french baguette to smell and taste like a Louisville Slugger, then DO NOT USE these products. A general rule of thumb – if the firewood / kindling you are looking at has a slick / oily texture or has a hint of gloss, or even smells like it may contain chemicals, don’t use it. ONLY USE natural, well-seasoned kindling that is dry to the touch with little to no odor. NEVER EVER, EVER USE LIGHTER FLUID! NEVER!!!
